Festivals are events that shape the rhythm of social life, accelerate cultural transmission, and reinforce collective memory at the local level. By creating temporary spaces of interaction, they offer valuable insights into how individuals construct a sense of belonging, unite around shared values, and reproduce local identity. Accordingly, the primary aim of this study is to examine how local residents’ perceptions and emotional solidarity toward the Gaziantep International Gastronomy Festival, as an international tourism event, influence their support for the festival. The secondary aim of the study is to investigate the effects of the festival’s positive and negative impacts on the emotional solidarity of the local community.A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered face-to-face during the festival. A total of 832 participants, selected through a convenience sampling method, took part in the survey. The findings indicate that the positive impacts of the festival and emotional solidarity significantly strengthen residents’ support for the event, whereas the negative impacts have a limited influence on such support. Among the negative effects, only the dimension related to security risks revealed a statistically significant difference, suggesting that residents are notably sensitive to issues concerning crowd density, public order, and safety during the festival period. Despite these concerns, the local community’s overall attitude toward the festival is positive, and residents express strong support for its continuation. Participation in the festival enhances individuals’ levels of social engagement and emotional solidarity, demonstrating the festival’s role in strengthening social bonds. Another significant finding is that women attach greater importance to the entertainment opportunities and emotional aspects of the festival, while single participants display higher levels of social interaction and satisfaction. Furthermore, as education level and prior festival experience increase, awareness of and support for the festival’s positive impacts also rise. Overall, the study provides an original contribution to understanding local residents’ attitudes toward festival tourism and offers valuable insights into how local support can be strengthened for the sustainability of festival organizations. The findings are expected to guide both public institutions and private sector stakeholders in developing strategies for local development and destination management.
