Batılılaşmanın ilk resmi adımı Tanzimat Fermanı’nın ilan edilmesidir. Osmanlı toplumu, Tanzimat Fermanı ile bir zihniyet değişimi yaşamıştır. Bu değişimi eğitim, felsefe, sanat, ahlak gibi birçok alanda görmekteyiz. Osmanlı aydınlarından bir grup Batı’nın tekniğinin, bilimin ve zihniyetinin olduğu gibi bütünüyle alınmasının gerekliliğini savunmuşlardır. Diğer bir grup aydın ise Batı’yı örnek almakla birlikte kendi milli, manevi, dini değerlerimize de sahip çıkılması gerekliliğini savunmuşlardır. Mehmed İzzet, ikinci aydın grubunu temsil eden önemli isimlerdendir. Bu çalışmada, Tanzimat sonrası ahlak anlayışı Mehmed İzzet’in şahsında anlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca İzzet’in Osmanlı düşüncesinde, Kant’ın vazife anlayışını temsil ettiği ortaya konulmuştur.Westernization represents a breaking point for the Ottoman Empire. The first official step of Westernization is the proclamation of the Tanzimat Edict. Ottoman society experienced a change of mentality with the Tanzimat Edict. We see this change in many areas such as education, philosophy, art and morality. A group of Ottoman intellectuals argued that the technique, science and mentality of the West should be taken as it was. Another group of intellectuals, taking the West as an example, advocated the necessity of protecting our own national, spiritual and religious values. Mehmed İzzet is one of the important names representing the second group of intellectuals. In this study, the understanding of morality after the Tanzimat was tried to be explained in the person of Mehmed İzzet.
