The laser rod and the flashlight are cooled by force. The waste heat generated throughout the laser device must be removed from the device. Small powerful systems are air-cooled or nitrogen. The gases do not provide a good heat energy transfer. However, gas cooling is sufficient for low power pulsating systems. Most solid state lasers use liquid-cooled systems. Water is also used as the cooling fluid.
