Borden Parker Bowne'un tanrı anlayışı

Boston Personalizmi adlı felsefî ekolün kurucusu olan Amerikalı filozof Borden Parker Bowne (1847-1910), felsefeci kişiliğinin yanısıra bir teolog ve kendisini Hristiyan-Metodist imanını dünyaya hakim kılmaya adamış bir misyonerdir. Bowne'un teizm üzerine yaptığı çalışmaları hazırlarken temel amacı; zihnindeki Tanrı tasavvurunu felsefenin imkânlarından yararlanarak aşama aşama sistematik bir şekilde temellendirebilmektir. Bowne, bu amacına ulaşabilmek için ontolojik delile yaslanarak zihnindeki Tanrı tasarımının, önce Tanrı'nın tekliği, zekâsı, kişiliği, kudreti, değişmezliği, ezelîliği, ebedîliği ve ilminden oluşan "metafiziksel" yönünü, sonra o metafiziksel yönle birleşerek onun "dinin Tanrısı" haline gelmesini sağlayan ahlâkî yönünü inşa eder. Bowne'a göre Tanrı'nın zekî oluşu, Onun hem kendisini hem de nesnelerini bilmesi anlamına gelir. Kişilikli oluşu ise, Tanrı'nın zekâsının yanısıra iradesinin de olması yani hem kendisini hem de faaliyetlerini bilinçli bir şekilde belirleyip yönetmesi anlamına gelir. Teslis inancını rasyonalize etme arzusunda olan Bowne, bu hedefine ulaşabilmek için, Tanrı'nın ahlâkî mutlaklığıyla mutlak ve biricik tekliğinin bağdaşmayacağı probleminin gerçekliği varsayımı üzerine bina ettiği görüşlerle bizi teslis inancının makul olduğunun kabulüne ikna etmeye gayret eder. Bowne'a göre ahlâkî hayat, topluluğu ima ettiği için mutlak tek olan bir Tanrı ahlâkî değerlere sahip olamaz. Bu yüzden mantık, Tanrı'nın ahlâkî açıdan mutlak Tanrı olması için ezelî refakatçi ya da refakatçilere sahip olması gerektiğini ima eder. Tanrı'nın ahlâkî mutlaklığını tesis eden bu ezelî refakatçiler ise, Tanrısal doğanın tekliği içerisinde tasavvur edilen kişiler yani Oğul ve Kutsal Ruh'tur. Bowne'un felsefesi, teolojik bir apolojetik yani dinî inançların savunulması olarak tasvir edilebilir. Zira düşünürün felsefesi ile teolojisi, mahiyet itibariyle yakın benzerlik arz etmekte ve o, felsefenin olanaklarından faydalanarak aklındaki teolojiye ulaşmaya gayret etmektedir.

American philosopher Borden Parker Bowne (1847-1910) who is the founder of the philosophical school named Boston Personalism, besides his philosophical career, is a theolog and a missioner who dedicated himself to dominate his methodist-christian faith on the world. The main aim of Bowne's studies in theism is to substantiate the conception of God in his mind gradually and sistematically by using the devices and potentialities of philosophy. To achieve his goal, depending on the ontological argument, Bowne constructs firstly the metaphysical dimension of his conception of God which consists of the unity, intelligence, personality, omnipotence, unchangeability, eternity and omniscience of God and secondly the ethical dimension of his conception of God which unites with that metaphysical dimension and forms the "God of Religion". According to Bowne, the intelligence of God means that He knows both himself and His objects. His personality means that besides His intelligence God has self-control namely He determines and directs both Himself and His activities consciously. Bowne who wishes to rationalize the belief of trinity, applying to the thoughts which he built upon the assumption of the problem that the ethical absoluteness of God is incompatible with His absolute unity is real, tries us to accept the belief of trinity is reasonable to achieve his goal. According to Bowne, because ethical life implies plurality and community, a God who is absolutely single cannot have ethical values. That's why logic requires that God must have His adequate eternal companions in order to be the ethically absolute God. These eternal companions who constitute the ethical absoluteness of God are the persons who are conceived in the unity of the nature of God namely the son and the holy spirit. Bowne's philosophy can be described as a theological apologetics that is a defense of the religious beliefs. For his philosophy and theology have resemblance to each other and he tries to reach the theology in his mind by using the potentialities of philosophy.
