Evaluation of alexithymia, anger and anxiety depression levels in smokers
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2024) Alagoz, Yasemin; Cihan, Fatma Goksin; Kutlu, Ruhusen; Alagoz, Celal; Eren, I'brahim; Ecirli, Samil
ObjectiveSmoking is a major mental health concern due to its addictive nature and its status as the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide. This study aimed to examine the levels of alexithymia, anger, anxiety, and depression in smokers compared to nonsmokers.Materials and MethodsThis case-control study involved 176 smokers from a Smoking Cessation Clinic and 175 age- and gender-matched nonsmokers. Participants completed assessments using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Nicotine dependence in smokers was measured using the Fagerstrom Nicotine Dependency Test. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0.FindingsSignificant differences were observed between smokers and nonsmokers in TAS, TAS-1, TAS-2, HADS-A, and HADS-D scores. Smokers exhibited higher levels of alexithymia, anger expression, and anxiety, while nonsmokers demonstrated better anger control. Additionally, addiction levels in smokers were associated with variations in TAS, TAS-1, TAS-2, TAS-3, STAXI scores (SA, AC, AI, AO), and HADS-A, highlighting a complex interplay between addiction, psychological factors, and smoking habits.ResultThis study establishes a link between smoking status, addiction levels, and elevated alexithymia, anger, anxiety, and depression. The findings underscore the psychological impact of smoking, contributing valuable insights for mental health interventions in individuals with smoking habits.

Evaluation of oxidant/anti-oxidants status in patients with mild acute pancreatitis
(Univ Catholique Louvain-Ucl, 2016) Baser, Husniye; Can, Ummugulsum; Karasoy, Deniz; Ay, Abdulhalim Serden; Baser, Salih; Yerlikaya, Fatma Humeyra; Ecirli, Samil
Background and aim : Acute pancreatitis (AP), an inflammatory disorder of the pancreas, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of AP has been suggested to involve high oxidative stress (OS), combined with inadequate antioxidant status. We aimed to investigate the levels of serum total anti-oxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in patients with mild AP. Methods : Thirty subjects with mild AP and 29 healthy controls were enrolled into the study. The levels of TAS, TOS and IMA, Creactive protein (CRP), high sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) and fibrinogen were measured in both groups. Results : TAS levels were significantly lower (p = 0.037), while IMA levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in patients, compared to controls. TOS levels were similar between two groups. Fibrinogen, CRP and hs-CRP levels were significantly higher in patients than those of controls (p < 0.001 for all parameters). IMA levels were positively correlated with amylase and lipase levels (r = 0.448, p = 0.001 and r = 0.469, p < 0.001, respectively). There was a negative correlation between TAS levels, and amylase and lipase levels (r = -0.277, p = 0.035 and r = -0.278, p = 0.034, respectively). Conclusions : OS is reported to be associated with the inflammatory process and the severity of AP. In our study, among OS parameters, an increase in IMA levels and a decrease in TAS levels were observed in mild AP patients.

Evaluation of the knowledge level and attitude of physicians towards obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
(Bayrakol Medical Publisher, 2021) Sarioglu, Ayse; Ecirli, Samil; Senturk, Hayriye; Pekgor, Selma; Vatansev, Hulya; Bekci, Taha Tahir
Aim: The knowledge level and approach of physicians in Turkey to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is unknown. The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge level and attitudes of physicians from various branches to OSAS. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, Obstructive Sleep Apnea Knowledge and Attitude (OSAKA) questionnaire was performed in order to measure knowledge levels and attitudes to OSAS. SPSS 22 package program was used for statistical analysis of data, p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Four hundred forty-four physicians (16 from fundamental sciences, 295 from internal branches, 99 from surgical branches and 34 general practitioners) participated in the study. The mean knowledge score was 11.41 +/- 3.05 (0-18). The knowledge score of physicians aged 30 years and younger was significantly higher than those aged 31 years and older (p <0.001). There was a negative correlation between knowledge score and age of doctors (rs=-0.214, p <0.001). The level of knowledge of pulmonologists and ENT specialists was higher compared to physicians of other branches (p <0.05). No significant difference was detected between the knowledge scores of academicians and non-academicians (p> 0.05). There was no correlation between knowledge scores and academic degrees (rs=-0.072, p = 0.188). It was observed that the knowledge level of physicians whose professional experience was 4 years or less was higher than that of those whose professional experience was 5 years or more (p = 0.001). A negative correlation was also detected between knowledge scores and professional experience (rs=-0.193, p <0.001). Discussion: It was determined that physicians' level of knowledge about OSAS was not sufficient and they felt insufficient about the management of OSAS patients. It would be appropriate to raise awareness of OSAS among practicing physicians within the scope of vocational training as well as in medical faculties and institutions providing specialist training.
