Öğe Aripiprazole-Induced Sialorrhea Responsive to Diphenhydramine Treatment(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2016) Kilinc, Saliha; Herguner, Arzu; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Association Between Age at Menarche and Autistic Traits in Turkish University Students(Wiley, 2016) Herguner, Arzu; Herguner, SabriObjectives: The androgen theory of autism suggests that masculinizing effect of fetal androgens may play a role in the expression of autism. Recent evidence showed that excessive prenatal androgen exposure might delay age at menarche (AAM). The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between autistic traits and AAM in a sample of non-clinical female university students. Methods: Autistic traits were measured using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), and AAM was questioned by retrospective self-reports. The AQ was completed by 436 female university students. Results: There were significant positive correlations between AAM and AQ total and subscales measuring Social Skills, Communication, and Imagination. Subjects with above average autistic traits reported later AAM than subjects with below average autistic traits. Conclusion: These findings suggest that there may be a common developmental mechanism between delayed menarche and autistic traits, possibly through elevated levels of prenatal androgens. Methods: Study group (SG) included children between 4 and 12 years. As a control group (CG), children between 4 and 12 years without VNs were included in the study. Parents of the participants completed the Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Short Form (CPRS-RS) which was used to analyze the symptoms of ADHD. Results: Forty-five children (30 boys and 15 girls) with VNs and 45 controls (30 boys and 15 girls) were enrolled in the study. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that the CPRS-RS Hyperactivity and Oppositional Subscales were significantly higher in the SG than the CG (p < .05), after controlling the effects of age and gender. Conclusions: Our findings suggest associations between VNs and hyperactivity and oppositional behaviors in children. Clinicians should be aware of ADHD symptoms in children with VNs. In this study, we investigated the ADHD symptoms in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a complex endocrine, hormonal, and metabolic condition associated with hyperandrogenism. Methods Forty women between the ages of 18 and 35 years with PCOS were recruited for the study group. For comparison, 40 healthy women who had regular menses were included. Current and childhood ADHD symptoms were assessed by using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale and Wender-Utah Rating Scale, respectively. Results Women with PCOS had higher total Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale and total Wender-Utah Rating Scale scores than controls. According to the Wender-Utah Rating Scale, the frequency of childhood ADHD was significantly higher in PCOS group than the control. Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale: Hyperactivity-Impulsivity and Wender-Utah Rating Scale: Behavioral Problems/Impulsivity scores were significantly higher in women with PCOS. However, there were no significant differences between groups in both current and childhood inattention scores. We found no correlations between ADHD symptoms and serum hormone levels including testosterone in women with PCOS. Conclusions These results suggest that women with PCOS have higher ADHD symptoms. Further studies are needed to investigate the association between PCOS and ADHD.Öğe Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms in children with traumatic dental injuries(Wiley-Blackwell, 2015) Herguner, Arzu; Erdur, Aybuke Emire; Basciftci, Faruk Ayhan; Herguner, SabriAim: The aim of this study was to compare the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with TDIs withto non-injured children. Material and methods: Children between 7 and 16 years old who were admitted to the Selcuk University, Faculty of Dentistry, for treatment of dental trauma were included in the study group (SG). As a control group (CG), children with no reported history of dental trauma were recruited. The Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Short Form (CPRS-R:S) was used to assess ADHD symptoms. Results: Both groups, SG and CG, composed of 55 children. There were no significant differences in age, gender, and duration of education between SG and CG. Children with TDIs had significantly higher CPRS-R: S Hyperactivity scores. Hyperactivity level was positively correlated with the history of previous dental trauma. There were no associations between number of injured teeth, type of injury, and ADHD symptoms. Conclusions: These findings suggest that children with TDIs have more hyperactive symptoms than children without dental trauma. Clinicians should screen ADHD symptoms in children with TDIs and refer them for treatment when necessary.Öğe Autism in Southeast Europe: A Survey of Caregivers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2017) Daniels, Amy M.; Como, Ariel; Herguner, Sabri; Kostadinova, Krasimira; Stosic, Jasmina; Shih, AndyThe aim of this study was to understand the diagnostic, service and lived experiences of families affected by ASD in Southeast Europe. A total of 758 caregivers from Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Turkey were surveyed from 2013 to 2015 about characteristics of the child with ASD; service encounters; and caregiver perceptions. The average age at first concern was 24.4 months (SD 11.8) and at diagnosis, 40.0 months (SD 19.0). Psychiatrists were the most common diagnostician; most children received some ASD-related service, most frequently speech and language therapy. Caregivers endorsed challenges in access to care and perceived stigma. Despite country differences, findings relative to age at first concern, disparities in access and service utilization, and stigma speak to common regional needs.Öğe Autistic traits in women with polycystic ovary syndrome(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2012) Herguner, Sabri; Harmanci, Hatice; Herguner, Arzu; Toy, HarunSeveral studies suggested that prenatal androgen exposure might contribute to development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The androgen theory of autism proposes that autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are in part due to elevated fetal testosterone levels. Furthermore, higher rates of androgen-related conditions including PCOS are reported in women with ASC. In this study, we aimed to measure the autistic traits in women with PCOS. Forty females who had a diagnosis of PCOS were recruited for the study group. For comparison, 40 healthy age - and Body Mass Index (BMI) - matched women who had regular menses were included. All participants completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). There were no significant differences in age, education, and BMI between groups. Total AQ and communication scores were statistically higher in females with PCOS. Although social skills, imagination, attention to detail and attention switching scores were higher in women with PCOS, these did not reach significance. This study showed that autistic traits were higher in women with PCOS than healthy controls which supports that prenatal exposure to high levels of androgen may be involved in development of ASC. In this paper, we describe an adolescent with autistic disorder and mental retardation who developed severe inappropriate sexual behaviors and has been treated successfully with risperidone-paroxetine combination. As presence of hypersexual behaviors in individuals with autism is a distressing factor for their family and social environment, appropriate management seems to be essential. In this chart review, we explored the effect of OROS long-acting methylphenidate (MPH) treatment on encopresis in children with ADHD. We also evaluated the relationship between the clinical variables of ADHD and encopresis. Methods: The sample consisted of 21 children and adolescents (20 boys and 1 girl) with encopresis and coexisting ADHD 7-15 years of age. Their clinical characteristics and baseline (visit 1) and end of the second months' (visit 2) Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) subscores were recorded. Retrospective clinician determinations were made using the Clinical Global Impressions-Severity subscale (CGI-S) for encopresis severity and the Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement subscale (CGI-I) for encopresis response. Results: According to the CGI-I, 14 subjects (71.4 %) showed much or very much improvement in their encopresis at the second visit. All of the CPRS scores showed a significant reduction during the second visit. No association was found between the CGI-I score and the changes in any of the CPRS scores. Baseline oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) scores were correlated with the CGI-S score; however, no association was found between core ADHD symptom severity and the CGI-S score. With regard to the encopresis outcome, the baseline CD score was negatively correlated with the CGI-I score, and the baseline ODD score was prone to show a negative correlation with the CGI-I score. Conclusions: These results suggest that coexisting behavioral problems may be a vulnerability factor based on the severity of encopresis, and that MPH treatment may have a positive effect on encopresis in children and adolescents with ADHD.Öğe Functional Vomiting Treated Successfully with Aripiprazole in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2016) Acikel, Burak; Yar, Ahmet; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Internet addiction is related to attention deficit but not hyperactivity in a sample of high school students(Informa Healthcare, 2015) Yilmaz, Savas; Herguner, Sabri; Bilgic, Ayhan; Isik, UmitObjective. To assess the effects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom dimensions on Internet addiction (IA) aft er controlling for Internet usage features among high school students. Methods. This study consisted of 640 students (331 females and 309 males) ranging from 14 to 19 years of age. The Internet Addiction Scale, the Conners-Wells 'Adolescent Self-Report Scale-Short Form, and a personal information form were completed by the participants. Statistical analyses were conducted for both sexes and the total sample. Results. According to the logistic regression analysis, attention deficit and playing online games were significant predictors of IA in both sexes. Other predictors of IA included behavioral problems for females, total weekly Internet usage time, and lifelong total Internet use for males. Hyperactivity and other Internet usage features did not predict IA. Conclusion. These results suggest that attention deficit and playing online games are important determinants of IA in this age group.Öğe Mirtazapine for Choking Phobia: Report of a Pediatric Case(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2015) Tanidir, Canan; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Nasal and Gingival Bleeding During Aripiprazole but not Haloperidol Treatment(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2016) Hosoglu, Esra; Bayram, Ozlem; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Oral Decongestant-Induced Mania in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2017) Kilinc, Saliha; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe OROS-Methylphenidate-Induced Raynaud's Phenomenon: A Dose-Related Side Effect(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2015) Bayram, Ozlem; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Pica in an Adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorder Responsive to Aripiprazole(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2016) Herguner, Arzu; Herguner, Sabri[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Postpartum Depression in Mothers of Infants with Very Low Birth Weight(Turkish Neuropsychiatry Assoc-Turk Noropsikiyatri Dernegi, 2013) Herguner, Sabri; Annagur, Ali; Clcek, Erdinc; Altunhan, Huseyin; Ors, RahmiBackground: Giving birth to an infant with very low birth weight (VLBW) is a major life event for a mother. Several studies have shown that mothers of these infants are at greater risk of psychological distress. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of depressive symptoms and to determine the associated factors among mothers who have infants with VLBW. Methods: The sample consisted of 105 subjects: 35 mothers of VLBW infants (<1500 g), 35 mothers of low birth weight (LBW) infants (1500-2500 g), and 35 mothers of healthy term infants (>2500 g). The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to detect maternal depressive symptoms. Maternal social support was assessed by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results: The mean EPDS score and the number of mothers with high depressive scores (EPDS>12) were significantly higher in mothers of infants with VLBW than in mothers of LBW and term infants. EPDS score was negatively correlated with birth weight, gestational age, and perceived social support and positively correlated with duration of hospital stay in mothers of infants with VLBW. Low birth weight and long hospital stay were found as predictors of postpartum depression in mothers of infants with VLBW. Conclusion: The birth and subsequent hospitalization of an infant with very low birth weight evoke psychological distress in mothers. Pediatricians should be more careful about depressive symptoms of mothers of infants with VLBW and should refer for counseling when it is necessary.
