Öğe The behavior of Turkish exchange rates: A panel data perspective(Elsevier, 2014) Adiguzel, Ugur; Sahbaz, Ahmet; Ozcan, Ceyhun Can; Nazlioglu, SabanThis paper investigates the behavior of Turkish exchange rates within the context of purchasing power parity (PPP) hypothesis by means of recent developments in the panel unit root testing procedures for ten Turkish real exchange rates during January 2002-May 2012. The unit root test which accounts for nonlinearity, smooth structural shifts, and cross-section dependency supports that PPP hypothesis holds for Eurozone and European countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom), while it does not hold for non-European trading partners (Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and USA). From the empirical results, we can conclude that PPP, hypothesis holds in the countries which have the free trade agreement, while it is violated in the countries in which there are trade barriers and greater distance. The findings therefore provide policy implications for Turkey in determining equilibrium exchange rates with her major trading partners. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this vein, it is very important to empirically investigate the determinants of tourism demand for the policy makers both in public and private sectors. The aim of this study is to examine the factors that affect the demand for tourism in the most attractive first 10 countries for tourist and propose policy implications based upon the empirical findings. The study, by employing panel unit root, panel cointegration, panel error cointegration approach and by utilizing the data for the period 1995-2011, tries to determine whether income, price stability, supply capacity, exchange rate and political stability have any impacts on demand for tourism in the selected 10 countries. Econometric results obtained from panel cointegration analysis show that macroeconomic factors as such income, prices, supply capacity, exchange rate and political stability play statistically significant role in determining the demand for tourism in top 10 countries.Öğe The effect of globalization, income and tourism on environment: An empirical analysis(Varna Univ Management-Vum, 2022) Ozcan, Ceyhun Can; Gerceker, Mustafa; Ozmen, Ibrahim; Mucuk, MehmetThis study investigates the impact of globalization, real income, and tourism on the environment in top 10 destinations that attract the most tourists, using panel unit root, panel cointegration, and panel cointegration estimators for the period between 1995 and 2014. Panel cointegration test results show that the series moves together in the long run. According to the long-run panel estimator results, an increase in real income negatively affects the environment in China, France, Spain, Thailand, and the UK. Tourism decreases environmental degradation in Germany, Italy, the UK, and the United States. Globalization reduces environmental degradation in France and the UK. The short-run panel estimator shows that an increase in real income in all countries, except China, increases environmental degradation. Tourism decreases environmental degradation in Mexico and increases it in Spain. Finally, globalization contributes to the reduction of environmental degradation in Italy.Öğe Geography of Turkish Soap Operas: Tourism, Soft Power, and Alternative Narratives(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2016) Anaz, Necati; Ozcan, Ceyhun Can[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe The socio-cultural determinants of tourism: the case of Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2023) Bayrakci, Selman; Ozcan, Ceyhun CanPurpose - The study aims to determine the socio-cultural variables that affect Turkey's tourism demand. The study proposes how important socio-cultural determinants as well as economic determinants affect tourism demand. Design/methodology/approach - The study examined a sample of 19 countries sending the most visitors to Turkey between 1996 and 2017 by using panel unit root, panel cointegration tests and cointegration estimator methods. The data set consists of variables such as GDP per capita (lnGDPP), total population number (lnPOP), urbanization level, information and communication technology (lnICT), human development index (lnHDI), education level and death rates (lnDTH). Findings - The findings from the analysis provide evidence that the variables in the models show the expected effects on tourism demand. The findings show that apart from economic variables, socio-cultural variables also have an important effect on tourism demand. Research limitations/implications - The socio-cultural models used in the study were created using variables that can be quantified. The study results are valid for the countries included in the analysis. Practical implications - The findings of this study will contribute to policymakers in determining the market for Turkish tourism. The results show that the policies to be prepared by considering the socio-cultural characteristics of countries can increase the tourism demand. Originality/value - The study is significant in that it focuses on socio-cultural variables rather than economic variables commonly used in the literature. The study is original in terms of both the study sample and the model and considers cross-sectional dependency (CD) and homogeneity.
