The effect of advocacy education of nursing students on attitudes towards disability: a quasi-experimental study
(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2022) Demiroren, Nesime; Su, Serpil; Basit, Gulden
Objectives: To determine the effect of advocacy education on the attitude of nursing students towards persons with disabilities. Methods: This study is a one-group pretest-posttest design: a quasi-experimental study. The study population consisted of 38 students who were enrolled in the advocacy course in the final year of nursing school in a public university. A ten-week Disability Advocacy Education Program was implemented. Data was collected using the Data Sheet and Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities. Results: Male students were found to have higher mean scores after the education; there was no statistically significant difference for other variables such as family structure, place of residence, and whether they have received education on disabilities. Conclusions: Nursing students have a positive attitude towards people with disabilities, and that male students' attitudes improved after education. Implications for International Audience: Advocacy education provided to students help them develop a positive attitude towards people with disabilities.

The effect of drama-supported, patient role-play experience on empathy and altruism levels in nursing students: A randomized controlled study*,**
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2023) Basit, Gulden; Su, Serpil; Geckil, Emine; Basit, Osman; Alabay, Kubra Nur Kose
Aim: This study aims to determine the effect of drama-supported, patient role-play experiences on the empathy and altruism levels of nursing students. Background: Empathy, one of the most important skills of the nursing profession, has an important place in the patient-nurse relationship. To be empathetic, which is acknowledged as the most basic motivation of altruistic behavior, requires recognizing emotional states and understanding the needs of others.Design: The format of this study was a pre-test-post-test, regular parallel-group, randomized, controlled experiment. Methods: The study data were collected between October 2021 and February 2022. The research was carried out with second-year students at Necmettin Erbakan University, Faculty of Nursing, who did not have any history of hospitalization or any chronic diseases. All subjects agreed to participate in the study (n = 52, intervention group=26, control group 26). Data were collected using a Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Altruism Scale and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy for Nursing Students (JSENS). After a three-hour drama workshop, partic-ipants in the intervention group acted out the role of a bed-bound patient in the laboratory environment and no intervention was applied to the control group. A series of Mixed ANOVAs were conducted for the analysis of the data. Results: The mean age of participants was 19.94 years (SD = +/- 1.31) and 83.7 % of the participants were women. The intervention group showed a significant increase in altruism compared with the control group, as evidenced by higher scores in the Altruism Scale Total Score and a significant group*time interaction effect. However, in the JSENS Total Score, including the perspective taking and standing in patient's shoes sub-dimensions, no differ-ences were observed based on group, time and group * time interactions. Conclusion: The patient role-play experience increased the empathy and altruism levels of nursing students, but the effect was not evident at the three-month follow-up.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Care Dependency and Self-Care Behaviors in Chemotherapy Patients
(Galenos Publ House, 2023) Koyuncu, Naciye Esra; Su, Serpil
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The symptoms experienced by patients receiving chemotherapy reduce their ability to perform daily life activities, adversely affect their quality of life, and make them dependent on care to meet their care needs. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between care dependency and self-care behaviors in patients undergoing chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 100 patients in T0rkiye between November 2018 and February 2019. Ethics committee approval, institution permit, and patient consent were obtained to conduct the study. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using the Patient Information Form, Care Dependency Scale, and Self-care Behavior Scale according to Self-Care Inability Theory in Patients Receiving Chemotherapy. In the analysis of the data, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson correlation test, and regression analysis were used in independent groups. RESULTS: It was found that 74% of the patients who participated in the study were male, 48% were between 39 and 58 years old, 38% were diagnosed with lung cancer, and 63% received 2-4 cycles of chemotherapy. The mean scores of Care Dependency Scale (68.98 +/- 15.89) and Self-care Behavior Scale According to Self-Care Inability Theory in Patients Receiving Chemotherapy (69.54 +/- 13.20) were at a moderate level. It was determined that the patients' care dependency scores accounted for the change in the total score of self-care behaviors at a rate of 21%. CONCLUSION: As a result, the study found that self-care behavior increased as the care dependency of chemotherapy patients decreased, and self-care behaviors were affected by care dependency at a low rate.

Perceived Individualized Care and the Satisfaction Levels of Patients Hospitalized in Internal Medicine Departments: A Cross-Sectional and Correlational Survey
(Marmara Univ, Inst Health Sciences, 2022) Kilic, Hulya Firat; Su, Serpil; Gok, Nur Demet
Objective: Individualized nursing care, which indicates the belief on the uniqueness and worthiness of human beings, improves the quality of healthcare and contributes to patient satisfaction. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the perceived individualized care and the level of satisfaction with nursing care for patients hospitalized in internal medicine departments. Methods: This study was carried on 250 patients hospitalized in internal medicine department of a university hospital in Turkey between December 2019 and February 2020. Patient information form, individualized care scale and the Newcastle satisfaction with nursing scale were used for data collection. Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H and Spearman's rho correlation test were used for data analysis. Results: Participants believed that the nursing interventions supported their individuality and had positive perceptions about the individuality in their own care. They were highly satisfied with the nursing interventions. Besides there was a positive correlation between the scores obtained from the individualized care scale and Newcastle satisfaction with nursing scale. Finally, age and education levels of the patients had a positive impact on perceived individualized care and the level of satisfaction with nursing care. Conclusion: The findings suggest that individuality of each patient should be prioritized during the nursing interventions in order to increase patient satisfaction and improve the quality of nursing care.

The Relationship Between Nurses' Professional Values and Their Attitudes Towards Care Giving Roles: A Structural Equation Model
(Marmara Univ, Inst Health Sciences, 2022) Bakir, Hasan; Su, Serpil
Objective: The study was carried out to examine the relationship between nurses' professional values and caregiver roles. Methods: This study is based on a descriptive correlational research design using a structural equation model. 366 nurses participated in the study. It was gathered using Nurse Promotion Form the Professional Values Scale of Nurses and the Attitude Scale for Their Caregiver Roles. Results: The total mean score of the Nurses' Professional Values Scale was determined as 94.73 +/- 17.87. Nurses' Perceptions of Caregiving Roles Attitude Scale total score mean was determined as 62.41 +/- 9.22. According to the Structural Equation model, professional values of nurses explain 39% of the change in the value of the attitude towards caregiver roles (R2 =0.39).Conclusion: Nurses' professional values and attitudes towards caregiver roles are at a good level and professional values of nurses partially affect the attitude towards caregiver roles.
