Öğe Acute long-distance trail running increases serum IL-6, IL-15, and Hsp72 levels(Canadian Science Publishing, Nrc Research Press, 2019) Yargic, Melda Pelin; Torgutalp, Seyma; Akin, Senay; Babayeva, Naila; Torgutalp, Murat; Demirel, Haydar AliInterleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-15, and heat shock protein 72 (Hsp72) are molecules that have significant metabolic effects on glucose and fat metabolism and a cell's stress response. The aim of this study is to determine serum levels of these molecules in runners after a long-distance trail run. Serum IL-15 levels after such endurance events have not been investigated yet. Blood samples were collected from 37 athletes (11 female, 26 male) before and after a 35-km trail run, with a total climb of 940 m. Serum was obtained from the samples, and IL-6, IL-15, and Hsp72 levels were measured from using the sandwich ELISA method. The athletes completed the race in 308.3 +/- 37.4 min on average. After the race, the mean serum IL-6, IL-15, and Hsp72 concentrations increased 13.2-fold, 2.22-fold, and 1.6-fold, respectively (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.039, respectively). This is the first study to demonstrate the increase in serum IL-15 levels following an acute endurance exercise. In addition to IL-15, we report that IL-6 and soluble Hsp72 levels also increased significantly following a 35-km trail run. Since these molecules are involved in regulating glucose and fat metabolism, significant increases of IL-6, IL-15, and soluble Hsp72 may have health benefits that may be associated with long-distance trail runs, which are becoming more popular worldwide.Öğe Assessment of orthorexia nervosa via ORTO-R scores of Turkish recreational and competitive athletes and sedentary individuals: a cross-sectional questionnaire study(Springer, 2021) Ozdengul, Faik; Yargic, Melda Pelin; Solak, Rabia; Yaylali, Oguzhan; Kurklu, Galip BilenPurpose This study aims to evaluate and compare the scores of a self-reported measurement of orthorexia nervosa among Turkish people who engage in different levels of physical activity (sedentary individuals, recreational athletes and competitive athletes). Methods Data for this study were collected through a self-administered online questionnaire between March and April 2020 in Turkey. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: personal information (sociodemographic and anthropometric information, training and dieting regime) and the ORTO-11 Scale. Only the items in the revised scale (ORTO-R) were used for analysis. Measurement invariance was tested and latent means were compared across different activity groups, sexes and levels of education. Results Analysis was done with a total of 877 participants (514 sedentary, 271 recreationally active, and 91 competitive athletes). Mean age of participants was 29.12 +/- 11.15. Sedentary people were less likely to follow a particular diet. Configural, metric and partial scalar invariance were proven across three groups of physical activity and the difference between latent means was found nonsignificant (competitive vs sedentary: CR = - 0.53,p = 0.592; competitive vs recreational: CR = 0.25,p = 0.724; sedentary vs. recreational: CR = - 1.35,p = 0.183). Configural, metric and full scalar invariance were proven across sexes and different levels of education, and difference between latent means was found nonsignificant (CR = - 1,11,p = 0.272; CR = - 0.53,p = 0.587, respectively). Conclusion In conclusion, people who compete at sports events, exercise regularly at a recreational level, or lead a sedentary life have similar scores in ORTO-R. A number of similar studies have been conducted in other parts of the world that investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of athletes about doping. The results of those studies cannot entirely be extrapolated to elite Turkish athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate elite athletes' current knowledge of appropriate drug use, doping and use of supplements, and to explore the need for further education on these topics. A total of 202 Turkish athletes participated in this descriptive cross-sectional study. The data were collected through a questionnaire. A five-point Likert scale was used for questions. The most commonly used over-the-counter medications by athletes were painkillers (78.2%). A remarkable proportion of athletes considered painkillers (41.1%), protein powder (43.1%), and caffeine (41.1%) to be prohibited drugs. According to the athletes, physicians (84.6%) and coaches (78.6%) were the two most frequently used sources of information, and 87.6% of the athletes found the physician to be the most reliable source of information. Elite athletes have poor knowledge about doping in Turkey. There is an urgent need for educational anti-doping programmes to address the knowledge gaps observed amongst athletes in this study.Öğe Effectiveness of Ultrasound-Guided Corticosteroid Injections, Prolotherapy, and Exercise Therapy on Partial-Thickness Supraspinatus Tears(Human Kinetics Publ Inc, 2022) Eroglu, Ali; Yargic, Melda PelinContext: To investigate the effects of steroid injection (STE), prolotherapy (PRO), and exercise therapy in the treatment of partial tears of the supraspinatus. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: A total of 64 patients with clinically and radiologically diagnosed partial-thickness supraspinatus tear who received either a cortisone injection (STE), dextrose PRO, or physical therapy combined with home-based exercise therapy were included. Main outcome measures were patients' visual analog scale scores, Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index scores, and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores at the baseline, 3 weeks, and 3 months. Results: The effect of group, time, and group-time interaction on visual analog scale, WORC, and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores was statistically significant (P<.001). Visual analog scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores were the lowest in the STE group at week 3, and the lowest in the PRO group at month 3 (P < .001). WORC scores of the STE group were the highest at week 3 (P < .001). At month 3, WORC scores of STE and PRO groups were similar (P = .089), but significantly higher than exercise therapy. Conclusions: Corticosteroids provide a fast pain-relieving effect and improvement in function in partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, but these effects diminish over time, whereas PRO provides a long-lasting effect.Öğe Improved Pinch Force Sense in Adolescent Female Weightlifters(Wiley, 2019) Erdagi, Kenan; Yargic, Melda Pelin; Aydin, Leyla[Abstract Not Availabe]Öğe Participation trends and performance analysis of Turkey's long-distance runs between 2007-2017(Gdansk Univ Physical Education & Sport, 2019) Yargic, Melda Pelin; Babayeva, Naila; Iyisoy, Mehmet Sinan; Kurklu, Galip Bilen; Donmez, GurhanBackgroung: Long-distance running events have gained more popularity worldwide over years. However, the number of participants to such events, age and sex distribution of participants may vary by country. Material and methods: We have investigated participation trends and performances of the finishers of three different courses (15km, half-marathon, marathon) in two of the biggest running events in Turkey (the Antalya and Istanbul marathons) between 2007-2017. Results: Our results have shown that runners who completed the 15km course were the highest and marathon finishers were the lowest in number each year. Among native runners, male participation in each distance and event is higher than female participation. Native female marathon finishers increased only by 0.23% in 6 years. In all distances, women run at a lower average speed than men each year. Between 2007-2017, the mean average speed of women were 9.10km/h (+/- 0.18), 9.71km/h (+/- 1.62) and 9.72km/h (+/- 1.73) and the mean average speed of men were 10.45km/h (+/- 2.02), 10.89km/h (+/- 1.83) and 10.40km/h (+/- 1.80) at 15km, 21km and 42km respectively. Conclusions: An important sex gap was observed in participation in long-distance runs in Turkey, which is more pronounced in marathons. Performance analysis showed that females' mean average speed is lower than males' in all distances.Öğe THE USE OF COMPUTER BASED TEST BATTERY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS IN ELITE-LEVEL STRENGTH TRAINING(IEEE, 2019) Yargic, Melda Pelin; Erdagi, Kenan; Aydin, Leyla; Kiziltan, ErhanThe aim of this study was to propose a standard test battery consisting of necessary tools for measuring and comparing the various aspects of cognitive outcomes. The battery was used to determine whether adolescent women performing regular elite-level strength training differed from their sedentary peers in terms of cognition, and also to determine how a single session of strength training affects cognition in highly trained adolescents. Motor functions, ability of sustaining attention and executive functions of 25 elite female weightlifters and 22 sedentary females were evaluated through finger tapping performance, visual reaction time (VRT) and recognition visual reaction time (R-VRT) data. Weightlifters were tested before and after a training session, sedentary controls were tested only during resting. There was a significant increase in mean complex R-VRT of weightlifters after training (p<0.01). In R-VRT tests, rate of false answers increased significantly after training (p<0.05). Mean VRT of weightlifters (during rest) and sedentary peers were not different in any of the tests (p>0.05). Total number of taps and mean inter-tap intervals did not show any difference in the weightlifter group before and after training, also between weightlifters and sedentary controls (p>0.05). Elite level strength training does not improve cognition in adolescence. Adolescent weightlifters' executive functions are deteriorated following a single training session however, this effect is temporary.
