For PV distribution to experience sustainable growth in the future, especially considering the additional costs of handling solar disruption, further cost reductions may be needed. The adopted cost analysis model uses detailed, device-level cost models to understand how features of a technology or manufacturing process contribute to costs in one or more ways. The analysis provides information on how individual cost components contribute to total costs linked to the physics of PV technologies. The Minimum Sustainable Prices model has been adopted in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards together with the Levelized Cost of Electricity Calculator software (System Advisor Model, SAM), in order to identify and calculate two key-metrics: $/ and the Levelized Cost of Electricity for photovoltaics, and they have been found to be 0.25 $/ for a facility in urban China producing more than 1.0 GW, and 4.80 sent/kWh for Phoenix, Arizona - USA, respectively. Based on the numbers extracted from the analysis, areas of research that have the greatest impact on cost reduction have been identified. Future projections of the $/ metric have been estimated to be: 0.19 $/ in 2025 and 0.17 $/ in the foreseen future.
