Öğe Association between ischemia-modified albumin, homocysteine, vitamin B12 and folic acid in patients with severe sepsis(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2012) Erdem, Said Sami; Yerlikaya, Fatma Humeyra; Cicekler, Humeyra; Gul, MehmetBackground: The aim of the present study was to investigate scrum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), homocysteine, malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin B-12 and folic acid levels in patients with severe sepsis, compared to healthy control subjects. Also, we examined associations of these parameters with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with severe sepsis and healthy control subjects. Methods: This study was performed on 71 (40 male, 31 female) patients with severe sepsis aged 18-65 years and 70 (34 male, 36 female) healthy control subjects aged 18-65 years. Samples of patients were obtained at study entry within 24 h of onset of severe sepsis. Results: Serum IMA, homocysteine and MDA levels of the patients with severe sepsis were significantly higher than those of the healthy control subjects (p<0.0 I for IMA and homocysteine, and p<0.001 for MDA). There was no significant difference between serum vitamin B12 and folic acid levels of the groups. Serum hsCRP levels were positively correlated with IMA (p<0.01) and MDA (p<0.01) in the patients with severe sepsis. Conclusions: Our findings show that IMA may be useful as a prognostic biomarker because it can indicate the severity of illness in patients with sepsis.Öğe Association between ischemia-modified albumin, homocysteine, vitamin B12 and folic acid in patients with severe sepsis(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2012) Erdem, Said Sami; Yerlikaya, Fatma Humeyra; Cicekler, Humeyra; Gul, MehmetBackground: The aim of the present study was to investigate scrum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), homocysteine, malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin B-12 and folic acid levels in patients with severe sepsis, compared to healthy control subjects. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an anti oxidative enzyme, which eliminates lipid peroxides. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of phototherapy on serum PON1 activity and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in hyperbilirubinemic full-term newborns. Material and Method: The study was performed on 40 full-tenn newborns between 3 to 15 days of age exposed to phototherapy. SerumPON1 activity and TAC levels of the babies were determined before and after phototherapy by spectrophotometric assays. Results: We have found that PON1 activity was not significantly affected by phototherapy whereas TAC levels were decreased significantly after phototherapy (p<0.001). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that phototherapy has no direct effect on PON1 activity. Also, decreased TAC levels might have resulted from increased oxidative stress which may lead to consumption of antioxidant molecules.Öğe Oxidant and antioxidant parameters in prediabetes and diabetes(Springer India, 2015) Erdem, Said Sami; Toker, Aysun; Kayrak, Mehmet; Cicekler, Humeyra; Gonulalan, Gulsum; Abdulhalikov, Turyan; Yerlikaya, Fatma HumeyraThe aim of our study was to evaluate serum paraoxonase (PON1), total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in patients with prediabetes, diabetes, and in healthy control subjects. The subjects were aged between 20 and 60 years. Forty diabetic subjects (mean age 46.6 +/- 9.7 years), 39 prediabetic subjects (mean age 44.0 +/- 9.3 years) and 24 healthy control subjects (mean age 43.7 +/- 9.7 years). Lipid profile, PON1, TAS, TOS and IMA levels were measured. The serum TOS and IMA levels in diabetes were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (P=0.024 and P=0.012, respectively), while the serum PON1 levels of the diabetes patients were significantly lower than those of the control subjects (P=0.039). The serum TOS levels of the diabetes patients were significantly higher than those of the subjects with prediabetes (P=0.013). There were no significant differences between the serum IMA and PON1 levels of the prediabetes and diabetes groups (P=0.075 and P=0.110, respectively). The serum TAS levels of the three groups were similar. The present study demonstrated that in diabetes there is greater oxidative stress. Patients with type 2 diabetes had higher TOS and IMA levels, but lower PON1 values, than controls. There were no differences in oxidative stress markers between prediabetic patients and healthy subjects.Öğe The relationship between glomerular filtration rate, and metabolic and inflammatory parameters in obese and non-obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(Elsevier, 2020) Can, Mustafa; Duran, Cevdet; Guney, Ibrahim; Elmas, Halis; Ayhan, Mehmet; Erdem, Said SamiAim: To investigate the relationship between glomerular filtration rates (GFR), and homeostasis model assesment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Material and methods: Thirty-one overweight and obese PCOS patients with body mass index (BMI) >= 25 kg/m(2) and 25 non-obese PCOS patients with BMI < 25 kg/m(2) were included into patients' group, while 23 overweight and obese, and 25 non-obese age-and BMI-matched healthy individuals (aged between 18 and 40 years), were enrolled as controls. Levels of serum creatinine, glucose, insulin, CRP, and complete blood count were measured. eGFR, HOMA-IR and NLR were also calculated. Results: In PCOS group, HOMA-IR (p=0.001), CRP (p=0.025) and waist hip ratio (WHR) (p=0.011) were higher than controls. In obese PCOS sub-group, HOMA-IR (p=0.004) and WHR (p=0.002) were higher than obese controls. In non-obese PCOS sub-group, HOMA-IR (p=0.001) were higher than non-obese controls. In obese PCOS sub-group; HOMA-IR (p = 0.001) and CRP (p=0.001) levels were significantly higher than non-obese PCOS sub-group. In terms of other parameters, no significant difference was found between the groups. The analysis showed a negative correlation between GFR, and BMI and HOMA-IR in PCOS group, between GFR, WHR and insulin levels in obese PCOS sub-group, and between BMI, and HOMA-IR and NLR in non-obese PCOS sub-group. Conclusion: Although HOMA-IR and CRP were higher in PCOS group, there was no difference in NLR and GFR levels between those with PCOS and controls. (C) 2020 Sociedad Espanola de Arteriosclerosis. MHT appears to cause cardiovascular (CV) complications similar to clinically overt hypertension. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous nitric oxide inhibitor and higher plasma levels of ADMA are related to increased CV risk in both the general population and among patients with DM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between MHT and ADMA in diabetic patients. Methods: This study included DM patients (n = 131) with normal office blood pressure (<140/90 mmHg). None of the participants were using antihypertensive medications. All participants utilized an ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM) for 24 h. Serum ADMA and arginine levels were measured using the fluorescence detector high performance liquid chromatography method. Results: The prevalence of MHT was 24.4% among the study subjects. ADMA levels were increased in the MHT group when compared with normotensive diabetics (6.2 +/- 2.2 vs 4.2 +/- 1.7 mu mol/L p = 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, arginine/ADMA ratio was lower in the MHT group than among the normotensive group (29.9 +/- 12.1 vs 46.0 +/- 19.0 p = 0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression model, ADMA, BMI and HDL levels were found to be independent predictors of MHT Odds ratio: 1.63 (1.28-2.06), 1.19 (1.05-1.35), and 0.95 (0.90-0.99), respectively. The cut-off value of the ADMA was 4.34 mu mol/L with a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 84.4%, 59.6%, of 40.3%, and 92.2%, respectively (AUC - 0.78). Conclusions: Serum ADMA may play a role in both the pathophysiology and screening of MHT in DM subjects. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
