In this thesis, carbon-aramid fiber reinforced hybrid nanocomposites were produced using a vacuum assisted hand lay-up method using hallocite nanotubes (HNTs) modified epoxy matrix. Hardness measurements of neat carbon-aramid fiber reinforced hybrid composites and HNTs-added carbon-aramid fiber reinforced hybrid composites were performed using Brinell hardness test according to ASTM D785- 08 standard, and wear test are performed according to ASTM G99 standard. The wear tests are performed on the ball-on-disk to analyze the tribological effect of neat and HNTs-added specimens at 10, 15, and 20 N loads and 1 m/s sliding speed. In addition, wear rate and friction coefficient results are also provided to explore the effects of HNTs on the tribological behavior of hybrid composites. The wear mechanism of the neat and HNT-added specimens was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and elemental analysis of the worn surfaces was obtained using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Then, the surface morphology was evaluated with 3D topography images, and thermal camera images were used to determine the thermal conductivity effect of HNTs on wear. The wear test results showed that the addition of HNTs to the composite reduced the coefficient of friction by 9%, 10%, and 11% for 10N, 15N, and 20N loads, respectively. The wear rate is also reduced by an average of 75% for wear loads. The surface form images obtained from the 3D topography supported the increase in the friction coefficient and wear rate values, and the thermal camera images showed that the thermal conductivity development in the contact area showed that the HNTs have good thermal properties. In addition, the solid lubricant property of HNTs such as tribofilm formation was determined as the main reason for the increase in the tribological performance of nanocomposites. Finally, a detailed wear mechanism is proposed to explain the wear behavior of HNTs reinforced carbon aramid hybrid composites based on SEM images.
