In this thesis, the conceptual and detailed mechanical design of a light-class fixed-wing UAV with variable wing incidence was carried out. The dimensions of the wing, tail surfaces, fuselage, and landing gear were determined; and the motor, propeller, battery, and electronic speed controller were selected. In the detailed design phase, the three-dimensional model of each component was created in SolidWorks, and the overall UAV assembly was completed. By assigning materials to the components, a realistic mass distribution was obtained, and the mass (𝑚), center of gravity location, and moments of inertia (𝐼𝑥𝑥, 𝐼𝑦𝑦, 𝐼𝑧𝑧, 𝐼𝑥𝑧) were extracted from the model. To obtain the aerodynamic coefficients and derivatives, UAV models with nine different wing incidence values were prepared in OpenVSP by varying the incidence from −2∘ to +6∘ in one-degree increments. For each incidence value, aerodynamic analyses were performed by varying the angle of attack from −5∘ to +15∘, and 9 × 21 tables were generated for the lift coefficient (𝐶𝐿), drag coefficient (𝐶𝐷), and pitching moment coefficient (𝐶𝑚). Similarly, by varying the sideslip angle from −10∘ to +10∘, tables for the side force coefficient (𝐶𝑌), roll moment coefficient (𝐶𝑙), and yaw moment coefficient (𝐶𝑛) were obtained. The data obtained from SolidWorks and OpenVSP/VSPAERO were transferred to MATLAB/Simulink, and a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) nonlinear flight model was developed. The aerodynamic coefficient tables were integrated into the model as two-dimensional lookup tables depending on wing incidence–angle of attack and wing incidence–sideslip angle. Thus, the effects of wing incidence variation on the aerodynamic force and moment coefficients and on the 6-DOF model response were investigated. Within the scope of controller design, a PID controller was developed, and the longitudinal responses at different wing incidence values were evaluated. In addition, a state-space model was obtained for the longitudinal channel around the selected trim point, and an observer was designed to improve pitch angle estimation under noisy measurement signals. The effect of wing incidence on take-off performance was also investigated analytically. The results showed that an increase in positive incidence reduces both the lift-off speed and the take-off ground roll distance. This indicates that the variable wing incidence mechanism has significant potential for improving short-runway take-off performance. Consequently, in this thesis, the mechanical design, aerodynamic modeling, nonlinear flight dynamics model, and longitudinal control system of a UAV with variable wing incidence were addressed in an integrated manner.
