Mass tourism in the world focuses on income and growth and the damage to the environment and cultures has increased. The concept of ecotourism, which emerged as an alternative to mass tourism, has adopted the main objectives such as reducing the impact of tourism on the environment, protecting local cultures and providing income to the public. Ecotourism activities, which have increased especially after the 1990s, have developed rapidly all over the world. The African continent is one of the continents where these developments are moost intense. The lands in the south of the Sahara Desert on the African continent, also called “Black Africa”, have shown an increase of 44 % in the number of tourists in the last 9 years, according to UNWTO 2019 data. When the ecotourism types that to the fore in Sub-Saharan countries are examined, the impact of biodiversity, natural beauty, cultural differences and history of local people on ecotourism types is remarkable. In this research, the annual visitor numbers of the countries in the region were taken as a basis by using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research method and prominent tourism destinations of 13 countries were examined. Accordingly, it has been found that “Big 5” and accordingly safari, the life styles and dances of local people, as well as the colonial histories are the determining features in the prominence of ecotourism activities in these researched countries. As a result, it is concluded that tourism and ecotourism countries in the African continent have developed under the influence of geographical and ethnic cultures of these regions.
