SPECIES DISTRIBUTION OF YEASTS ISOLATED FROM PATIENTS WITH VAGINAL CANDIDIASIS AND DETECTION OF THEIR ANTIFUNGAL SUSCEPTIBILITIES. In this study we aimed to determine the frequency, species distribution and antifungal susceptibilities of yeasts isolated from vaginal swab specimens. Yeasts were isolated in 20.5% of all vaginal swab specimens that were examined in the Medical Faculty of Selçuk University Microbiology Laboratory. Candida albicans was isolated dominantly from the specimens but nonalbicans Candida species were also determined as causative agents in high proportions. Most of the C. albicans and nonalbicans Candida species were found highly resistant to azole antifungal agents. For this reason, it is unavoidable to apply in- vitro antifungal susceptibility tests in clinical microbiology laboratories. For determining fluconazole resistance, disc diffusion method seems to be a simple and rapid procedure.
