Purpose: To investigate the levels of galectin 3, advanced glycation products and receptor for advanced glycation products in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and to examine the relationship of these molecules with each other. Materials and Methods: The study included 37 children and adolescents (19 F, 18 M) who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 35 children and adolescents (21 F, 14 M) who did not have any disease, who applied to the Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Medical Faculty Hospital. Galectin 3, AGE and RAGE levels were measured by ELISA method. SPSS IBM statistical program was used to analyze the results. Results: Galectin 3 [0.22 (0.18-0.41)] and AGE [10.83 (8.64-13.15)] levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus significantly higher than galectin 3 [0.18 (0.15- 0.25)] and AGE [8.13 (7.42-11.05)] levels) in control group (p<0.05). Although the RAGE level (91.28±72.12) of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes was higher than the RAGE (87.04±61.58) level of the control group, this elevation was not significant (p>0.05). Also, there was a negative correlation between AGE and galectin 3 (r=-0.343, p<0.05) in the control group, and no significant correlation was found between galectin 3 and RAGE. In the patient group, a negative correlation was found between AGE and galectin 3 (r=-0.346, p<0.05). However, a positive correlation was found between galectin 3 an RAGE (r=0.536, p<0.01). Conclusion: In our study, galectin 3 levels which we found higher in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes than in the control group, suggest that galectin 3 may have a role in the formation of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. Our study is the first to investigate the level of galectin 3 in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. We think that our study will contribute to the literature in this respect. Galectin 3 may be an important marker in type 1 diabetes and it may also play a role in the discovery of new pathways in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. For these, the role of galectin 3 in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and its relationship between AGE and RAGE should be supported by further research
