Öğe Adaptation and evaluation of Turkish version of the fear of COVID-19 Scale(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Haktanir, Abdulkadir; Seki, Tolga; Dilmac, BulentWe investigated the psychometric properties of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale in Turkish among a diverse group with a focus on the prevalence of coronavirus related fear across gender, age intervals, SES, chronic illness situation, and educational level. Based on a confirmatory factor analysis, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale had appropriate psychometric properties for utilization, including excellent goodness-of-fit indices, a Cronbach's alpha value of .86, and discriminant validity, as shown by a significant negative correlation with resilience. Furthermore, group comparison analyses revealed that women reported significantly higher fear of coronavirus. Additionally, individuals from middle SES reported significantly higher fear of coronavirus while the fear of coronavirus did not differ based on participants' educational level, socioeconomic status, and age level. Araştırmanın yayın yanlılığının değerlendirilmesinde Huni Grafiği, Orwin's Fail-Safe N, Begg and Mazummar rank correlation, Egger's regression intercept, Duval and Tweedie's trim ve fill yöntemi kullanışmıştır. Heterojenliğin kontrolünde Q istatistiği ve I² istatistiği gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan araştırmada on dört faktörün benlik saygısı ile ilişkisinin etki büyüklüğü ayrı ayrı hesaplanmıştır. Güvenli bağlanma (r=0.16) ile benlik saygısı arasında pozitif yönlü zayıf düzeyde etki büyüklüğü elde edilmiştir.Öğe Characteristics of counselors-in-training as a mediator between their values and counseling skills(Springer, 2023) Kurnaz, M. Furkan; Seki, Tolga; Dilmac, BulentResearch on counselors-in-training is necessary to improve the success of the counseling process. The counseling skills used by counselors are critical to managing this process. This paper aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in counseling pedagogy by examining the role of counselor characteristics as a mediator in the relationship between counselors-in-training values and counseling skills. In this study, we had 524 counselors-in-training from various universities in Turkey. The results showed that the values of counselors-in-training significantly predict their counselor characteristics. Specifically, the values of the counselors-in-training predict their counseling skills, with the mediating role of the counselor characteristics. Additionally, the counselor characteristics of the counselors-in-training significantly predicted their counseling skills. Various practices and methods can be applied to improve counseling skills. Given that the development of values allows counselors-in-training to acquire important counselor characteristics, value education is essential in the training of counselors. Individuals who acquire essential counselor characteristics can use their counseling skills effectively.Öğe Do we experience pandemic fatigue? current state, predictors, and prevention(Springer, 2022) Haktanir, Abdulkadir; Can, Nesime; Seki, Tolga; Kurnaz, M. Furkan; Dilmac, BulentThere is an emerging literature on the mental and physical exhaustion due to the COVID-19 related restrictions. Some individuals seem to exercise fewer precautions recently in comparison to the onset of the pandemic in preventing the spread of the COVID-19. This phenomenon is described as pandemic fatigue. Though acknowledged in conceptual articles and news reports, there is a lack of empirical evidence pertaining to pandemic fatigue. We collected data from 516 adult participants to investigate pandemic fatigue and its relations to fear of coronavirus, intolerance of uncertainty, apathy, and self-care. 34.40% of the participants reported that the level of COVID-19-related precautions they take have decreased in comparison to measures they took at the onset of the pandemic. Additionally, our model examining the role of fear of coronavirus, intolerance of uncertainty, and apathy as mediated by self-care predicting pandemic fatigue demonstrated acceptable to excellent goodness-of-fit indices. The fact that one in every three individuals is taking fewer precautions is not only a threat to the individuals' own health but also to the public. Given that individuals are experiencing pandemic fatigue, governments should consider paying more attention to the biopsychosocial nature of humans in ordering restrictions and planning necessary precautions.Öğe Ergenlerin Sahip Oldukları Değerler İle Öznel İyi Oluş Ve Sosyal Görünüş Kaygı Düzeyleri Arasındaki Yordayıcı İlişkiler: Bir Model Önerisi(2015) Seki, Tolga; Dilmaç, BülentAraştırmada ergenlerin sosyal görünüş kaygıları, öznel iyi oluşları ve sahip oldukları değerler arasındaki yordayıcı ilişkileri ortaya koymak ve bu ilişkiden hareketle oluşturulan modeli test etmek amaçlanmıştır. Ayrıca insani değerler ölçeğinin alt boyutlarından birçoğunun öznel iyi oluş ölçeğinin aile ilişkilerinde doyum, önemli kişilerle ilişkilerde doyum, yaşam doyumu ve olumlu duygular alt boyutunu açıkladığı bulunmuştur.Öğe Examining the Relationships Between Fear of Coronavirus, State Anxiety, and Relationship Happiness Among Married Turkish Individuals During COVID-19(Sage Publications Inc, 2023) Dilmac, Bulent; Karababa, Ali; Seki, Tolga; Simsir, Zeynep; Kurnaz, M. FurkanThe present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of state anxiety in the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 and relationship happiness among married individuals. An additional aim of the study also tested the moderating role of joint family activities between state anxiety and relationship happiness. The study sample consisted of 1713 married individuals (1031 women and 682 men). The study findings showed both the significant direct associations among the studied variables and the mediating role of state anxiety in the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and relationship happiness. It also found that the path of state anxiety to relationship happiness among married individuals having family activities was significantly lower than those who did not. Directions for future research and application were discussed.Öğe The mediating role of resilience in the relationship between helicopter parenting and several indicators of mental health among emerging adults(Wiley, 2023) Seki, Tolga; Haktanır, Abdulkadir; Şimşir Gökalp, ZeynepHelicopter parenting has received much attention in thelast decade. The growing literature on this phenomenonillustrates the negative consequences of helicopter parenting. The detrimental effects of helicopter parenting onemerging adults may be especially more present incollectivist cultures. Studies carried out with this population have demonstrated that mental health problemsamong this group are more prevalent than those of othergroups. Hence, an understanding of the factors affectingmental health at this age is critical. The deleterious effectsof helicopter parenting on mental health among emergingadults are well‐documented. However, there is a lack ofliterature investigating the mediating role of resiliencebetween helicopter parenting and mental health issues (i.e.,depression, anxiety, and stress). To bridge this gap, wecollected data from 402 emerging adults (M= 21.31,SD = 2.01). Our results revealed that although helicopterparenting was a risk factor for several indicators of mentalhealth among emerging adults, resilience mitigates thepotential detrimental effect of helicopter parenting.Öğe Predictor Relationships between the Values the Adolescents Have and Their Levels of Subjective Well-Being and Social Appearance Anxiety: A Model Proposal(Turkish Education Assoc, 2015) Seki, Tolga; Dilmac, BulentThe purpose of the current research was to examine the predictor relationships among adolescents' social appearance anxieties, subjective well-beings and the values they have; and to test the model set with reference to these relationships. The research was carried out by using relational survey model. Convenience sampling method was used to select the sample of the study. The sample of the study consisted of adolescents who were enrolled in public high schools of a city located at the centre region of Turkey in 2013-2014 education year. 322 male and 278 female students and in total 600 students aged between 13 and 18 participated in this study. In the present research, Human Values Scale developed by Dilmac (2007); Adolescent Subjective Well-being Scale developed by Eryilmaz (2009); Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Adolescent Form developed Hart (2008) and Turkish adaptation of by Dogan (2011) were used as the data collection instruments of this study. Data were analyzed using AMOS 19 software according to Structural Equation Model. The findings showed that the direct effects of values on social appearance anxiety and subjective well-being, the direct effect of social appearance anxiety on subjective well-being.Öğe The relationship between fear of COVID-19 and mental health problems: A meta-analysis(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Simsir, Zeynep; Koc, Hayri; Seki, Tolga; Griffiths, Mark D.The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused physical and mental health problems among individuals around the world. Recent studies have reported various mental health problems among both health-care workers and the general population. In this meta-analysis, evidence is provided concerning the relationships between the Fear of COVID-19 Scale. The fear of COVID-19 scale: Development and initial validation. International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction] - the most widely used, translated, and validated scale - and mental health problems including, anxiety, stress, depression, distress, post-traumatic stress, and sleep problems among the general population. We searched for relevant studies on Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, and ERIC databases and conducted a meta-analysis with selected studies in accordance with the inclusion criteria. A total of 33 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results demonstrated that fear of COVID-19 was strongly related to anxiety (r = 0.55, n = 19,578), traumatic stress (r = 0.54, n = 8,752), distress (r = 0.53, n = 11,785) as well as being moderately related to stress (r = 0.47, n = 4,340) and depression (r = 0.38, n = 23,835). The correlation with insomnia (r = 0.27, n = 2,114) was modest. These results demonstrate that fear of COVID-19 is associated a wide range of mental health problems among the general population.Öğe The Relationships Between Self-Control and Distress Among the Emerging Adults: A Serial Mediating Roles of Fear of Missing Out and Social Media Addiction(Sage Publications Inc, 2023) Koc, Hayri; Gokalp, Zeynep Simsir; Seki, TolgaPrevious studies have confirmed that poor self-control, fear of missing out (FoMO), and social media addiction are potential risk factors for young mental health. However, the relationships between self-control, FoMO, social media addiction, and emerging adult distress have received relatively little attention in empirical studies. In this regard, drawing on the self-determination theory (SDT), the current study investigates the serial mediating roles of FoMO and social media addictions between self-control and distress (depression, anxiety, stress). 866 students studying at seven different state universities in Turkey participated in this study (M age = 20.8, SD = 1.42). The findings revealed significant relationships between self-control, FoMO, social media addiction, and distress. The findings also support the proposed serial mediating model. In other words, the lack of self-control predicted greater FoMO, which in turn predicted increased social media addiction, which in turn ultimately predicted higher distress. Overall, these results suggested that the lack of self-control is a risk factor for mental health and that social media addiction and FoMO also increase this risk.
